Korean Airline Checked Baggage 2026: The Weight Limits and Fees That Surprise Tourists

The flight looked cheap until the check-in screen showed that your suitcase was not included.

A 15 kg or 23 kg bag purchased at the last minute can erase the savings from a low-cost ticket.

Before booking a Korean airline, compare the fare type as carefully as the ticket price.

Important:

The airline name alone does not determine your checked baggage allowance. The route, fare type, operating carrier and travel date can change what is included.

The number that matters

Open the fare details and look for 0KG, 15KG, 20KG, 1PC or 2PC before completing payment.

Information checked in July 2026:

Airlines can revise baggage allowances, prepaid-baggage deadlines and excess fees. The baggage line shown in the final booking or e-ticket remains the most important rule for the trip.

Quick Answer

The cheapest fare is not always the cheapest trip once checked baggage is added.

For many international Economy routes, Korean Air and Asiana include one suitcase weighing up to 23 kg.

Jeju Air BASIC and T’way Event Fare can include no free checked baggage on many routes. Jin Air commonly includes 15 kg on general international routes, but selected destinations use different rules.

Fast comparison

  • Common full-service allowance: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • Common low-cost-carrier allowance: 15 kg total
  • Lowest LCC fares: sometimes 0 kg
  • U.S., Guam, Saipan and Canada routes: often separate piece-based rules
  • Final authority: the allowance printed in the booking or e-ticket

Compare the total trip price using this formula:

Realistic ticket cost

Ticket price + selected seat + checked baggage + other required booking fees

Check the baggage line before you pay

Confirm whether the booking shows 0KG, 15KG, 20KG, 1PC or 2PC before entering payment details.

Korean Airline Checked Baggage Comparison

This comparison focuses on international Economy tickets commonly purchased by foreign travelers.

Route-specific, promotional, membership and codeshare conditions can override the typical values below.

Airline Lowest or Common Economy Allowance Major Exception Biggest Tourist Trap
Korean Air 1 × 23 kg on international routes excluding the Americas and Brazil Many non-Saver Americas Economy fares include 2 × 23 kg Economy does not automatically mean two free bags
Asiana Airlines 1 × 23 kg on non-U.S. routes U.S. routes include 2 × 23 kg Saipan follows the non-U.S. rule
Jeju Air BASIC 0 kg, STANDARD 15 kg North America STANDARD uses 1 × 23 kg The cheapest fare may include no checked bag
Jin Air Commonly 15 kg on general international routes Guam and selected routes use separate piece rules Do not assume every destination uses the same calculation
T’way Air Event 0 kg, Smart 15 kg, Regular 20 kg on routes without a separate rule Long-haul and selected routes use different allowances The route and boarding date can both change the allowance

How to use this table:

Use it to identify the likely rule, then confirm the exact allowance in the final fare details. Promotional fares, memberships, connecting airlines and special routes can change the result.

Piece System vs. Weight System

The difference between a piece allowance and a total-weight allowance causes many airport surprises.

Weight system

15 kg total

The allowance is expressed as a total weight. The airline’s rules determine how many bags can share that total and whether allowances can be combined.

This structure is common on many low-cost-carrier routes.

A suitcase weighing 18 kg on a 15 kg allowance creates 3 kg of excess baggage even when there is only one bag.

Piece system

1 piece × 23 kg

The ticket includes one suitcase, and that suitcase must remain within the stated weight and size limits.

Important:

“1 bag up to 23 kg” does not mean 23 kg split across two suitcases. A second suitcase can trigger an additional-piece fee even when the combined weight stays below 23 kg.

Three suitcase examples

One 12 kg suitcase: it fits within a 15 kg, 20 kg or 1 × 23 kg allowance.

One 22 kg suitcase: it fits within a 1 × 23 kg allowance but exceeds a 15 kg or 20 kg weight allowance.

Two 11 kg suitcases: the total is 22 kg, but a ticket showing 1PC can still charge for the second suitcase.

1. Korean Air Checked Baggage

Korean Air Economy does not automatically include two free 23 kg bags.

The route and fare category determine whether the ticket includes one or two pieces.

International routes excluding the Americas and Brazil

  • Economy Saver: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • Other Economy and Premium fares: 1 bag up to 23 kg

Routes to or from the Americas excluding Brazil

  • Economy Saver: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • Other Economy and Premium fares: 2 bags up to 23 kg each

Brazil routes have their own published conditions and ticket-issue dates. Check the exact booking rather than copying the general Americas rule.

Size limit

A standard free checked bag must normally remain within 158 cm when length, width and height are added together, including wheels and handles.

Korean Air excess fees

Korean Air calculates excess baggage according to the route and the type of excess.

  • Additional-piece fee
  • Overweight fee
  • Oversized fee

If the same suitcase exceeds more than one condition, separate charges can apply.

Use Korean Air’s baggage calculator or route table for the exact segment rather than relying on a single worldwide price.

Where to find the final allowance

Check the baggage line on the e-ticket receipt.

On a codeshare itinerary, the ticket may apply the marketing carrier’s rule, the operating carrier’s rule or another rule required by the itinerary.

Carry-on and checked baggage are different

The limits above apply to baggage handed over at check-in. Cabin-baggage size and weight are covered separately.

Check Korean Air Carry-On Rules →

2. Asiana Airlines Checked Baggage

Asiana uses a clear split between U.S. and non-U.S. international routes.

Non-U.S. routes

  • Economy Class: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • Maximum standard dimensions: 158 cm total

U.S. routes

  • Economy Class: 2 bags up to 23 kg each
  • Each bag must meet the individual weight and size limit

Saipan exception:

Asiana states that U.S. territories such as Saipan use the non-U.S. segment rule. Do not assume that every U.S.-associated destination receives two free bags.

Asiana excess fees

Asiana divides charges by route zone, additional bag, weight and size.

For Korea-departing non-U.S. routes, the first additional bag begins at KRW 60,000 in the shortest published zone and rises on longer routes.

That amount is only a route example. It is not a universal Asiana baggage price.

Overweight levels such as 24–28 kg and 29–32 kg may have different charges. An additional bag that is also overweight or oversized can create more than one fee.

Use the baggage calculator

Asiana’s baggage calculator asks for the route, cabin and membership level.

Use it after selecting the actual flight because membership status and connecting carriers can change the displayed result.

3. Jeju Air Checked Baggage

Jeju Air creates one of the clearest examples of a cheap fare becoming more expensive after baggage is added.

International fare allowances

  • BASIC: 0 kg
  • STANDARD: generally 15 kg
  • BAGGAGE+: generally 20 kg
  • BIZ LITE: generally 30 kg

North America routes use separate piece-based conditions.

  • STANDARD: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • BIZ LITE: 2 bags up to 23 kg each

Important:

Jeju Air BASIC can include 0 kg of free checked baggage. A traveler with a normal suitcase must add the baggage cost before comparing the fare with another airline.

Maximum checked-bag size and weight

A checked item normally must not exceed 158 cm in total dimensions.

One item can weigh no more than 32 kg. A bag over the allowed free amount still creates an excess charge even when it remains below the 32 kg acceptance limit.

Pre-purchase baggage

Jeju Air states that pre-purchased baggage is available at lower rates than airport payment.

The current service can generally be purchased until 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.

Buying excess baggage at the airport does not always guarantee acceptance when aircraft cargo space is limited.

How to compare the fare

Compare BASIC plus the required baggage with STANDARD or BAGGAGE+.

The lowest headline price may stop being the lowest total once a 15 kg or 20 kg allowance is added.

4. Jin Air Checked Baggage

Jin Air commonly includes checked baggage on its international fares, which can make its total price easier to compare with a baggage-free promotional fare.

General international allowance

  • Common allowance: 15 kg
  • General published size standard: within 203 cm total on many weight-based routes

The exact route page and booking details should be checked because selected destinations use separate conditions.

Guam and piece-based routes

Jin Air’s Guam rules use an individual piece limit rather than only a total-weight figure.

Each published piece must stay within its individual 23 kg and size limit.

This means a traveler cannot assume that the general 15 kg rule applies to every Jin Air international flight.

Read the units carefully:

A booking showing 15KG uses a different calculation from one showing 23KG × 2 pieces.

Pre-purchase baggage

Jin Air allows prepaid baggage through online and customer-service channels on eligible bookings.

The current guidance states that eligible advance purchases can be completed until four hours before departure, but the deadline and available amount should be confirmed in the reservation.

Jin Air excess fees

Fees vary by destination region and by whether baggage is purchased in advance or at the airport.

Use the booking-management page to compare the prepaid amount with the airport charge before travel.

During website maintenance, rely on the baggage line already shown in the confirmed reservation and recheck the service page when it becomes available.

5. T’way Air Checked Baggage

T’way Air has the widest route-based variation among the five airlines in this comparison.

The company is transitioning its registered name to Trinity Airways, although the T’way Air name may continue to appear on the website, tickets and airport counters while approvals are completed.

International routes without a separate allowance

  • Event Fare: 0 kg
  • Smart Fare: 15 kg
  • Regular Fare: 20 kg
  • Business Fare: 30 kg

Singapore and Jakarta

  • Event Fare: 15 kg
  • Smart Fare: 23 kg
  • Regular Fare: 23 kg
  • Business Fare: 40 kg

Europe

  • Event Fare: 15 kg
  • Smart Fare: 23 kg
  • Regular Fare: 23 kg
  • Business Fare: 40 kg

Guam, Saipan and Canada

  • Event, Smart and Regular: 1 bag up to 23 kg
  • Business: 2 bags up to 23 kg each
  • Weight pooling is not allowed on these piece-based routes

Australia route change

For departures through October 24, 2026, the published allowances are:

  • Event: 23 kg
  • Smart: 30 kg
  • Regular: 30 kg
  • Business: 40 kg

For departures from October 25, 2026, the published allowances change to:

  • Event: 15 kg
  • Smart: 23 kg
  • Regular: 23 kg
  • Business: 40 kg

Mongolia and Uzbekistan route change

For departures through October 24, 2026, most Economy fares show 2 bags up to 23 kg each.

For departures from October 25, 2026, Event, Smart and Regular change to 1 bag up to 23 kg. Business changes from 3 pieces to 2 pieces.

Check the travel date:

T’way Air publishes different allowances for some flights departing before and after October 25, 2026. The name Trinity Airways may also appear during the airline’s transition.

Extra Bag, Overweight and Oversized Fees

“Excess baggage fee” can describe three different charges.

Extra piece

Example

The ticket includes 1PC, but the passenger checks two separate suitcases.

Overweight bag

Example

The ticket includes one bag up to 23 kg, but the suitcase weighs 27 kg.

Oversized bag

Example

The weight is acceptable, but the combined exterior dimensions exceed the airline’s limit.

Important:

One suitcase can trigger more than one charge. An extra bag that is also overweight or oversized may be charged for the additional piece, excess weight and excess size separately.

How the five airlines calculate fees

Airline Main Fee Structure What to Check
Korean Air Route-based piece, weight and size charges Segment, cabin, extra pieces, weight band and dimensions
Asiana Route-zone piece, weight and size charges U.S. or non-U.S. route, number of bags and weight band
Jeju Air Route-based weight or piece charges with prepaid options Fare type, route group, online price and airport price
Jin Air Destination-based prepaid and airport charges Weight-based or piece-based route and purchase deadline
T’way Air Route-based prepaid or airport excess charges Fare, destination, travel date and baggage unit

Do not compare a short-haul fee with a long-haul fee or an online prepaid price with an airport price.

Open the official fee table for the exact departure and destination airports.

Prepaid Baggage vs. Airport Payment

Prepaid baggage is often the easiest way to prevent a cheap ticket from turning into an expensive airport surprise.

Compare this amount

Fare without baggage + prepaid baggage = realistic booking price

Why prepaid baggage can be better

  • It may cost less than airport payment
  • The total trip price becomes clear before travel
  • The selected weight or piece can appear in the reservation
  • It reduces check-in counter decisions under time pressure

Check the conditions before buying

  • Purchase deadline
  • Route eligibility
  • Weight increments or number of pieces
  • Refund conditions
  • Rules after changing the flight
  • Maximum weight accepted for one item

Jeju Air currently advertises lower prepaid rates and a general purchase deadline of 24 hours before departure.

Jin Air currently states that eligible advance baggage purchases through online and customer-service channels can be completed until four hours before departure.

Other airlines and routes may use different deadlines.

Important:

Do not wait until the airport simply because excess baggage can be purchased there. The airport price may be higher, and acceptance can still depend on aircraft loading limits.

Codeshare and Connecting Flights

A familiar airline logo at the top of the booking does not always identify the carrier whose baggage rule applies.

Look for these lines

  • Operated by
  • Baggage allowance
  • 0KG, 15KG, 20KG, 23KG, 1PC or 2PC

Important:

Do not rely only on the airline logo shown at the top of the booking. A codeshare or connecting itinerary may apply another carrier’s checked-baggage rules.

One ticket with several airlines

The applicable rule can depend on the itinerary, ticketing carrier, operating carriers and international baggage regulations.

Do not calculate each flight independently unless the booking instructs you to do so.

Check the baggage allowance printed for the complete direction of travel.

Separate tickets

Separate bookings create a greater risk of different baggage limits.

A first flight may include 23 kg while the next flight includes only 15 kg or no checked baggage.

The traveler may also need to collect and recheck the suitcase between tickets.

Ask the airline this question

Which checked baggage allowance applies to my full itinerary, and will the bag be checked through to the final destination?

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Korean airline gives the most free checked baggage?

There is no single winner for every route. Korean Air and Asiana often include 23 kg on international Economy fares, while some U.S. routes include two pieces. Selected long-haul T’way and Jin Air routes can also include larger or piece-based allowances.

Does Korean Air Economy include two 23 kg bags?

Not on every route. Many international routes excluding the Americas and Brazil include one 23 kg bag. On Americas routes excluding Brazil, Saver includes one bag while other Economy fares commonly include two.

How much checked baggage does Asiana allow?

Asiana Economy generally includes one 23 kg bag on non-U.S. routes and two 23 kg bags on U.S. routes. Saipan uses the non-U.S. rule.

Does Jeju Air BASIC include checked baggage?

No. Jeju Air currently lists 0 kg of free checked baggage for BASIC international bookings.

Does Jin Air include a free checked bag?

Jin Air commonly includes 15 kg on general international routes, but destinations such as Guam use separate piece-based rules.

Does T’way Event Fare include checked baggage?

It depends on the route. Event Fare includes 0 kg on international routes without a separate rule, but selected long-haul routes include 15 kg, 23 kg or a piece allowance.

What is the difference between 15 kg and 1 × 23 kg?

Fifteen kilograms is a total-weight allowance. One piece × 23 kg includes one individual suitcase weighing no more than 23 kg.

Can I split a 23 kg allowance between two suitcases?

Not when the allowance is shown as 1PC or one piece. A second suitcase may create an additional-piece fee even when the combined weight is below 23 kg.

Can two passengers combine their baggage allowance?

Do not assume that combining is allowed. Pooling rules vary by airline, route and fare. Some piece-based routes explicitly prohibit weight pooling.

Is prepaid baggage cheaper than airport payment?

It often is on Korean low-cost carriers, but the discount and deadline vary. Jeju Air currently advertises lower prepaid rates than airport rates.

What happens if one suitcase weighs more than 23 kg?

An overweight charge may apply. A suitcase above the airline’s maximum acceptable weight can also be refused or require repacking.

Can excess-piece and overweight fees be charged together?

Yes. An additional suitcase that is also overweight or oversized can trigger multiple charges.

Which baggage rule applies to a codeshare flight?

The result depends on the itinerary and carriers involved. Check the baggage allowance printed on the ticket and the “operated by” line.

Where can I find the allowance on my e-ticket?

Look for a baggage or allowance line showing a value such as 0KG, 15KG, 20KG, 23KG, 1PC or 2PC.

Do Guam and Saipan use different baggage rules?

They can. Each airline classifies routes differently. Asiana applies its non-U.S. rule to Saipan, while several low-cost carriers publish separate Guam and Saipan allowances.

Is T’way Air changing its name to Trinity Airways?

Yes. The registered company name has changed to Trinity Airways, but the T’way Air name may remain visible until the required approvals and operational transition are completed.

A cheap ticket is only cheap when it includes the luggage the traveler actually needs.

Before paying, open the fare details, identify the operating carrier and save the baggage allowance shown in the booking.
