Korean Air Carry-On Baggage Rules
Korean Air, South Korea’s largest full-service airline, allows Economy Class passengers to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item.
Korean Air Economy passengers can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item, but both must stay within a combined 10 kg limit.
The personal item does not come with a separate 10 kg allowance. A suitcase may also exceed the size limit once its wheels, handles and expanded pockets are included.
This guide explains Korean Air carry-on baggage rules for Economy, Premium, Prestige and First Class, including bag size, weight, liquids, power banks and codeshare flights.
Rule check: This guide reflects Korean Air and Incheon Airport rules checked in July 2026. Airport, destination and operating-airline rules can still change before departure.

Quick Answer
Korean Air uses the same basic carry-on allowance for domestic and international flights operated by Korean Air.
- ✓ Economy and Premium Class: one carry-on bag and one personal item
- ✓ Economy and Premium combined weight: 10 kg or less
- ✓ Main carry-on size: up to 55 × 40 × 20 cm
- ✓ Personal item size: up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm
- ✓ First and Prestige Class: two carry-on bags
- ✓ First and Prestige combined weight: 18 kg or less
- ✓ Wheels and handles count toward the size limit
- ✓ Codeshare flights may follow another airline’s baggage rules
The most common mistake is treating the personal item as a separate weight allowance. In Economy and Premium Class, the carry-on bag and personal item must remain within the combined 10 kg limit.
1. Economy Class Carry-On Allowance
Korean Air Economy and Premium Class passengers can bring one main carry-on bag and one small personal item.
The total weight of both items must not exceed 10 kg. This means a 10 kg suitcase plus a laptop bag would normally exceed the allowance once the laptop bag is added.
Main Carry-On Bag
- ✓ Maximum number: one bag
- ✓ Maximum size: 55 × 40 × 20 cm
- ✓ Maximum total dimensions: 115 cm
- ✓ Wheels and handles are included
- ✓ Must fit safely in the overhead compartment
Personal Item
- ✓ Maximum number: one item
- ✓ Maximum size: 40 × 30 × 15 cm
- ✓ Must fit under the seat in front
- ✓ Counts toward the combined 10 kg allowance
A handbag, laptop bag, briefcase or compact backpack may qualify as the personal item when it stays within the size limit and fits under the seat.
2. First and Prestige Class Allowance
Korean Air First and Prestige Class passengers can bring two carry-on bags with a combined weight of up to 18 kg.
- ✓ Maximum number: two carry-on bags
- ✓ Combined maximum weight: 18 kg
- ✓ Maximum size per bag: 55 × 40 × 20 cm
- ✓ Maximum total dimensions per bag: 115 cm
- ✓ Wheels and handles are included
The 18 kg allowance is the combined total for both bags. It is not an 18 kg allowance for each bag.
Both bags must also be light enough for safe cabin storage. Korean Air advises passengers to check bags that are too heavy to place in the overhead compartment without assistance.
3. Carry-On Size and Weight Rules
Korean Air measures the outside dimensions of the complete bag, not only the suitcase body.
The standard maximum is 55 cm high, 40 cm wide and 20 cm deep. The sum of all three dimensions must not exceed 115 cm.
Travel note: Measure the complete outside dimensions of your suitcase, including wheels, handles and expanded side pockets.
A suitcase body that measures 55 cm may still exceed the limit after the wheels are included.
Soft bags and backpacks can also exceed the limit when overpacked. Check the deepest point after all pockets are filled and closed.
A compliant bag is not always guaranteed overhead space. Korean Air may check a carry-on bag at the boarding gate when cabin storage is full or operational conditions require it.
Keep passports, medication, cash, electronics, power banks and other essential items in a smaller pouch that can be removed quickly before a gate-checked bag is taken.
4. What Counts as a Personal Item?
A personal item is a small bag that fits completely under the seat in front of the passenger.
Korean Air lists handbags, briefcases and laptop bags as common examples. A compact backpack can also work when it remains within the 40 × 30 × 15 cm limit.
Items That May Qualify
- ✓ Small handbag
- ✓ Laptop bag
- ✓ Briefcase
- ✓ Compact daypack
- ✓ Small camera bag within the limit
A large backpack may be treated as the main carry-on bag rather than the personal item. Carrying a suitcase, large backpack and laptop bag can therefore exceed the permitted number of items.
Duty-free shopping bags are not automatically excluded from the allowance. Korean Air states that duty-free purchases exceeding the carry-on allowance may need to be checked at the boarding gate, and excess baggage fees may apply.
5. Liquids, Batteries and Restricted Items
A bag can meet Korean Air’s size and weight limits but still contain an item that cannot pass airport security.
Liquids, Gels and Cosmetics
For an international flight departing from Incheon Airport, each liquid, gel or spray container in carry-on baggage must have a capacity of 100 ml or less.
All containers must fit inside one transparent, resealable 1 L bag. The printed container size matters, even when only a small amount remains inside.
A 150 ml lotion bottle with 20 ml left inside is still larger than the international carry-on limit.
Flying with liquids or cosmetics?
Check the 100 ml container limit, transparent bag rule and checked-baggage options before packing.
Power Banks and Spare Batteries
Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in the cabin. They must not be placed in checked baggage.
Korean Air requires battery terminals to be protected against short circuits. Use insulating tape or place each battery separately in a transparent plastic bag.
Power banks must not be used or charged during the flight and must not be stored in the overhead compartment. Keep them where they remain visible and accessible.
Korean Air’s current limit for power banks rated at 100 Wh or less is two per passenger. Power banks above 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh require airline approval, while products above 160 Wh are prohibited.
Packing a portable charger?
Check capacity limits, terminal protection and the latest Korean flight storage rules.
Aerosol Sprays
Travel-size personal-care aerosols such as hairspray or spray deodorant may be carried when they meet the applicable liquid and dangerous-goods limits.
For an international departure from Korea, an aerosol in carry-on baggage normally needs to be 100 ml or less and packed inside the transparent 1 L liquids bag.
Spray paint, butane gas containers, flammable insecticide and other hazardous aerosols may be prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.
Not sure about a spray can?
Compare carry-on, checked-baggage and hazardous aerosol rules before going through security.
E-Cigarettes
E-cigarettes must be carried in the cabin and cannot be packed in checked baggage.
Using or charging an e-cigarette during the flight is prohibited. Korean Air also states that e-cigarettes must not be stored in the overhead compartment.
Some countries prohibit the possession or import of e-cigarettes completely, so destination rules must be checked separately.
Items Prohibited in Both Carry-On and Checked Baggage
- ✓ Gasoline and lighter fluid
- ✓ Butane gas cartridges
- ✓ Fireworks and explosives
- ✓ Spray paint and certain hazardous aerosols
- ✓ Bleach and dangerous chemical substances
- ✓ Damaged, swollen or overheating batteries
6. How to Pack Within the Limit
Checking the suitcase alone is not enough in Economy Class. Weigh the main bag and personal item together.
- ✓ Weigh the carry-on and personal item together at home
- ✓ Measure the bag with wheels, handles and pockets included
- ✓ Keep the personal item within 40 × 30 × 15 cm
- ✓ Leave room for airport and duty-free purchases
- ✓ Keep power banks and spare batteries out of checked baggage
- ✓ Put international-flight liquids in one transparent 1 L bag
- ✓ Keep passports, medicine and valuables easy to remove
- ✓ Prepare for possible gate checking when overhead space is limited
A small digital luggage scale can prevent surprises at check-in. Weigh the bags again after adding a laptop, charger, water bottle or airport purchases.
Do not place essential medication, travel documents, cash or fragile electronics in a bag that may be checked at the gate.
7. Codeshare and Connecting Flight Rules
A Korean Air flight number does not always mean the aircraft is operated by Korean Air.
Important:
If your ticket is a codeshare flight, check the carry-on allowance of the airline actually operating the aircraft. Its baggage limits and check-in rules may be different from Korean Air’s rules. Connecting airlines, departure airports and transit airports may also apply different restrictions.
The operating airline is usually shown on the booking page or e-ticket with wording such as “Operated by” followed by the airline’s name.
For example, a ticket may display a Korean Air flight number while the flight itself is operated by a partner airline. Korean Air states that the operating airline’s baggage regulations and check-in time apply in this situation.
When an itinerary includes more than one airline, packing according to the smallest carry-on allowance is usually the safest approach.
Transit security can also affect liquids, aerosols, batteries and duty-free purchases. A product accepted at the first airport may still be restricted during another security screening.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much carry-on baggage is allowed on Korean Air?
Economy and Premium Class passengers can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item with a combined weight of up to 10 kg. First and Prestige Class passengers can bring two carry-on bags with a combined weight of up to 18 kg.
What is the Korean Air carry-on size limit?
The standard maximum size is 55 × 40 × 20 cm, including wheels and handles. The total of the three dimensions must not exceed 115 cm.
Does Korean Air allow a personal item?
Yes. Economy and Premium Class passengers can bring one personal item measuring up to 40 × 30 × 15 cm. It must fit under the seat in front.
Does the personal item count toward the 10 kg limit?
Yes. The main carry-on bag and personal item must remain within the combined 10 kg allowance for Economy and Premium Class.
Can I bring a backpack and a carry-on suitcase?
Yes, when the backpack qualifies as the personal item, fits under the seat and stays within the combined weight limit. A large backpack may be treated as the main carry-on bag instead.
Can I bring a 10 kg suitcase and a laptop bag?
A suitcase that already weighs 10 kg leaves no remaining weight within the combined Economy or Premium Class allowance. Adding a laptop bag would normally put the total above 10 kg.
Does Korean Air include wheels in carry-on measurements?
Yes. Wheels and handles are included when Korean Air measures the outside dimensions of a carry-on bag.
Does Korean Air weigh personal items?
The personal item is part of the official combined weight allowance, so it may be included when baggage is weighed. Actual checks can vary by airport and flight.
Can I bring liquids on Korean Air?
Yes, but international airport security rules apply. For international departures from Incheon Airport, each carry-on container must be 100 ml or less and fit inside one transparent 1 L bag.
Can I bring a power bank on Korean Air?
Yes, within Korean Air’s battery capacity and quantity limits. Power banks must remain in carry-on baggage, have protected terminals and must not be used, charged or stored in the overhead compartment during the flight.
What happens if my carry-on is overweight?
Korean Air may require the bag to be checked. If the checked bag causes the passenger to exceed the applicable checked-baggage allowance, an excess baggage charge may apply.
Can Korean Air check my carry-on at the gate?
Yes. A carry-on bag that meets the published size limit may still be checked at the gate when overhead storage is full or operational conditions require it.
Which rules apply to a Korean Air codeshare flight?
The baggage rules of the airline actually operating the flight apply. Check the “Operated by” information on the reservation or e-ticket before packing.
