Airport Security Rules in South Korea
A bag can meet your airline’s size and weight limits and still fail airport security in South Korea.
Liquids, power banks, aerosol sprays and sharp objects follow separate security rules. Checking these items before reaching the screening lane can prevent delays or having to leave something behind.
This guide explains the main airport security rules for travelers departing from South Korea, including Incheon Airport screening, carry-on liquids, batteries, medicine, aerosols and transit restrictions.
Rule check: This guide reflects official Incheon Airport information checked in July 2026. Security procedures, airline rules and destination restrictions can change before departure.

Quick Answer
Airport security decides which items may pass through the screening checkpoint. Your airline separately decides the number, size and weight of bags you can take on board.
- ✓ International liquids: 100 ml or less per container
- ✓ Liquid bag: one transparent 1 L resealable bag per passenger
- ✓ Power banks and spare lithium batteries: carry-on only
- ✓ Knives and most tools: pack in checked baggage
- ✓ Personal-care aerosols: allowed only within specific limits
- ✓ Liquid medicine and baby food may qualify for exceptions
- ✓ Transit airports may apply different security rules
Airline baggage rules are different:
Airport security decides what can pass screening, while your airline sets the size, weight and number of bags you may carry.
1. What Happens at Airport Security?
After check-in, go to the departure hall with your passport and boarding pass ready.
At Incheon Airport, passengers normally follow this process:
- ✓ Present your passport and boarding pass
- ✓ Temporarily remove a hat, sunglasses or mask when requested
- ✓ Place bags, jackets, phones, keys and loose items in a tray
- ✓ Pass through the metal detector or body scanner
- ✓ Complete additional screening if an alarm is triggered
Incheon Airport uses smart security screening in all departure halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Laptops, tablets and other electronics generally do not need to be removed from the bag in these lanes.
Travel note: Screening procedures can still vary by airport, terminal and security lane.
Keep liquids and electronics easy to reach and follow the security officer’s instructions if additional screening is required.
Travelers can review the official Incheon Airport security screening guide before departure.
2. Liquids, Gels and Sprays
For international flights departing from Incheon Airport, every liquid, gel or spray container in carry-on baggage must have a printed capacity of 100 ml or less.
The rule is based on the full container size, not the amount remaining inside. A 150 ml bottle with only 20 ml left still exceeds the carry-on limit.
All containers must fit inside one transparent, resealable 1 L bag. Each passenger may carry one liquid bag.
Products Treated as Liquids or Gels
- ✓ Water, drinks and juice
- ✓ Perfume, toner and lotion
- ✓ Shampoo and conditioner
- ✓ Toothpaste, sunscreen and lip gloss
- ✓ Hairspray and body insect repellent
- ✓ Kimchi, gochujang and other wet foods
Korean domestic flights do not apply the international 100 ml liquid rule in the same way. Dangerous-goods restrictions still apply, even on domestic routes.
Packing cosmetics, food or toiletries?
Check which products count as liquids and how to use the transparent bag correctly.
3. Medicine and Baby Item Exceptions
Some necessary medicine, baby food and special dietary products can exceed the normal 100 ml limit.
Liquid Medicine
Liquid medicine over 100 ml may be carried when it is needed during the flight and supported by a prescription or doctor’s note written in Korean or English.
Only the amount needed during the flight may be accepted in carry-on baggage. Extra liquid medicine may need to be placed in checked baggage when permitted.
- ✓ Keep medicine in its original labeled packaging
- ✓ Carry the prescription or doctor’s note
- ✓ Prepare only the amount needed during the flight
- ✓ Present the medicine separately when requested
Baby Milk and Food
Passengers traveling with a child under six years old may bring milk, water, juice, liquid food, porridge and wet wipes needed during the flight.
The exception is intended for a reasonable amount required during air travel. Security officers may inspect the items separately.
Traveling with medicine?
Check prescription, over-the-counter medicine and supplement rules before entering South Korea.
4. Sharp Items, Scissors and Tools
Knives are not allowed in carry-on baggage at Incheon Airport regardless of blade length. They may normally be transported in checked baggage when the item itself is legal and properly packed.
Hammers, wrenches and other tools are also treated as hazardous carry-on items and should be placed in checked baggage.
Usually Allowed in Carry-On
- ✓ Disposable razors with protected blades
- ✓ Safety razors with protected blades
- ✓ Electric shavers
- ✓ Rounded butter knives
Check Before Packing
- ✓ Scissors
- ✓ Multi-tools
- ✓ Hiking poles
- ✓ Selfie sticks
- ✓ Camera tripods
Hiking poles, selfie sticks and tripods may be allowed, but sharp or pointed ends can cause the item to be rejected from carry-on baggage.
Travel note: Security staff make the final decision based on the item’s size, shape and potential use.
When an item looks sharp, heavy or similar to a weapon, packing it in checked baggage is usually safer.
5. Power Banks, Batteries and Electronics
Power banks and spare lithium batteries must be carried in the cabin. They cannot be placed in checked baggage.
The battery terminals must be protected against short circuits. Use insulating tape, the original protective cover or a separate transparent bag for each battery.
Lithium Battery Capacity
- ✓ 100 Wh or less: generally allowed, but quantity limits vary by airline
- ✓ Over 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh: airline approval required, generally up to two
- ✓ Over 160 Wh: not allowed as normal passenger baggage
Do not travel with a swollen, damaged, leaking or overheating battery. The airline or security staff may refuse a battery that appears unsafe.
Laptops, tablets and cameras are generally allowed. At Incheon Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 smart security lanes, electronics can normally remain inside the bag, but travelers must still follow instructions at the checkpoint.
Packing a portable charger?
Check Wh capacity, quantity limits, terminal protection and cabin storage rules before departure.
6. Aerosols and E-Cigarettes
Aerosol Sprays
Personal-care aerosols such as travel-size hairspray and body insect repellent may be carried when they meet the applicable liquid and dangerous-goods limits.
- ✓ International carry-on: 100 ml or less per container
- ✓ Carry-on aerosols must fit inside the 1 L transparent liquid bag
- ✓ Eligible checked aerosols: up to 500 ml or 500 g per container
- ✓ Checked total: up to 2 L or 2 kg per passenger
- ✓ Spray valves should have a protective cap or locking device
Flammable household insecticide, spray paint, butane gas cartridges and dangerous chemical aerosols may be prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage.
Not sure about a spray can?
Compare personal-care aerosols, hazardous sprays, carry-on limits and checked-baggage rules.
E-Cigarettes
E-cigarettes are allowed only in carry-on baggage and cannot be placed in checked baggage.
Protect the device from accidental activation and follow the operating airline’s rules for storage, use and charging. The destination country may also prohibit possession or import of e-cigarettes.
7. Duty-Free Liquids and Transit Rules
Duty-free liquids over 100 ml may be carried when they are sealed inside an approved Duty Free Liquid Item Bag.
Keep the receipt with the purchase and do not open the sealed bag before boarding the final destination flight.
Important:
Airport security rules may change depending on your departure airport, destination, transit country and operating airline. An item accepted at a Korean airport may still be restricted during another security screening.
A foreign transit airport may inspect carry-on liquids again. Duty-free products accepted in South Korea can still be refused or surrendered during a connection if the local rules are different.
Check every airport on the itinerary, especially when changing terminals, collecting and rechecking baggage or traveling on separate tickets.
Incheon Airport provides a separate transfer security screening guide for connecting passengers.
8. Final Security Checklist
Use this list before leaving for the airport.
- ✓ Check the printed capacity of every liquid container
- ✓ Put international-flight liquids inside one transparent 1 L bag
- ✓ Remove power banks and spare batteries from checked baggage
- ✓ Protect exposed battery terminals
- ✓ Move knives and tools to checked baggage
- ✓ Check aerosols for flame, gas or toxic warning labels
- ✓ Carry a prescription for liquid medicine over 100 ml
- ✓ Keep duty-free liquid bags sealed with the receipt
- ✓ Check security rules at every transit airport
- ✓ Confirm the baggage rules of the operating airline
Incheon Airport states that prohibited items can lead to additional screening or removal of the item. Check unusual products before arriving at the airport instead of relying on the final decision at the checkpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the airport security rules in South Korea?
Travelers are screened for prohibited and restricted items, including liquids, batteries, sharp objects, tools, aerosols and dangerous materials. Airline baggage allowances are checked separately.
Can I bring liquids through Incheon Airport security?
Yes. On international flights, each carry-on container must be 100 ml or less and all containers must fit inside one transparent 1 L resealable bag.
Do I need to remove my laptop at Incheon Airport?
Incheon Airport states that laptops, tablets and other electronics do not need to be removed at the smart screening zones in all Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 departure halls. Follow the officer’s instructions if additional screening is required.
Can I bring a power bank through Korean airport security?
Yes, within the applicable capacity and quantity limits. Power banks must be carried in the cabin, and the terminals must be protected against short circuits.
Can I bring scissors in my carry-on in Korea?
It depends on the size and design. Because scissors can be treated as a sharp item, placing them in checked baggage is safer when the exact product has not been confirmed.
Are liquid medicines over 100 ml allowed?
They may be allowed when needed during the flight and supported by a Korean or English prescription or doctor’s note. Only the necessary in-flight amount may be accepted.
Can I bring baby milk through airport security?
Yes. Passengers traveling with a child under six may carry milk, water, juice and baby food needed during the flight, subject to security inspection.
Are aerosol sprays allowed in carry-on baggage?
Personal-care aerosols may be allowed on international flights when each container is 100 ml or less and fits inside the transparent 1 L liquid bag. Hazardous aerosols can remain prohibited.
Can I bring an e-cigarette on a flight from Korea?
An e-cigarette must be carried in the cabin and cannot be packed in checked baggage. Destination-country and airline rules must also be checked.
Can I bring duty-free liquids through a transit airport?
Possibly, when the purchase remains sealed inside an approved duty-free liquid bag with its receipt. A transit country can still apply different rules and refuse the item.
Are domestic flight security rules different in Korea?
Yes. Korean domestic flights do not apply the international 100 ml liquid limit in the same way, but dangerous-goods and prohibited-item restrictions still apply.
What happens if airport security finds a prohibited item?
The item may require additional inspection, be removed or confiscated, or be transferred to checked baggage when legally permitted and time allows. Security staff make the final decision.
