JEJU ISLAND GUIDE KOREA TRAVEL COMPARISON Public buses make car-free Jeju possible, but they do not always make it efficient. A guided tour costs more, yet it can save hours when several attractions are spread across the island. The better choice depends on whether you value lower transportation cost or more usable sightseeing time. Quick answer: Choose a guided day tour if this is your first Jeju trip and you want to cover several major attractions in one day without driving. Choose public buses if your budget matters more, you prefer a slower pace, or you plan to focus on only one or two areas each day. Transportation and activity information checked on August 21, 2026. Flying from China to Korea: Incheon, Busan or Jeju?

Travel thumbnail comparing Incheon, Gimhae, and Jeju airports for travelers flying from China to South Korea.

If you are flying from China to Korea, the best arrival airport is usually the one closest to the part of Korea you actually want to visit first. Incheon is the natural choice for Seoul, Gimhae can save a major cross-country transfer when Busan or Gyeongju is your priority, and a direct flight to Jeju can remove an unnecessary connection through the Korean mainland.

The cheapest international ticket is not automatically the cheapest trip. A lower fare to Incheon can lose its advantage after you add another train, domestic flight, airport transfer, baggage handling, and several more hours of travel.

The better method is to compare the journey from your departure city in China all the way to your first Korean hotel.

Infographic comparing Incheon, Gimhae, and Jeju airports by final destination, direct flight availability, onward travel, and total trip time.

1. Start with Your Final Destination

Choose your first Korean destination before choosing the airport.

If Seoul is where you plan to sleep on your first night, Incheon International Airport usually makes the most sense. If you are spending most of the trip in Busan and Gyeongju, a suitable nonstop flight to Gimhae can save a long transfer after immigration. If Jeju is the main destination, check whether a nonstop flight to Jeju exists from your Chinese departure city on your actual dates.

First Korea Destination Airport to Check First Main Reason
Seoul Incheon (ICN) Largest international gateway and straightforward Seoul access
Busan Gimhae (PUS) Avoids crossing Korea after international arrival
Gyeongju + Busan Gimhae (PUS) Keeps the trip in southeastern Korea from the beginning
Jeju Island Jeju (CJU) A nonstop international flight can remove a domestic transfer
Seoul + several Korean cities Incheon (ICN) Most flexible starting point for a wider Korea itinerary

Do not treat this table as a rule that overrides airfare or schedule. A direct flight that operates only twice a week at an inconvenient time may still be less useful than a frequent flight to another Korean airport.

2. Incheon: Best for Seoul and Multi-City Flexibility

Incheon International Airport is the safest default when Seoul is the first major stop.

Incheon is Korea's main international gateway and handles a very large volume of China-related traffic. Official airport statistics continue to show China as one of Incheon's largest international passenger markets.

The airport's biggest advantage is choice. Travelers can often compare more airlines, departure times, and Chinese cities than they can at Korea's regional airports.

Choose Incheon When

  • Seoul is your first destination.
  • You want the widest international flight selection.
  • Your trip includes Seoul before Busan or another region.
  • A regional direct flight does not operate on your travel date.
  • The fare or schedule advantage is large enough to justify extra travel inside Korea.

For immigration, baggage, customs, airport security, tax refund, and departure procedures, use the Incheon Airport and Korea Flight Guide.

3. Gimhae: Best for Busan and Gyeongju

If Busan is the real destination, landing near Busan can be more valuable than saving money on a ticket to Seoul.

Gimhae International Airport serves Busan and southeastern Korea. The airport currently lists several airlines connecting it with China, including China Eastern Airlines, Air China, and China Southern Airlines.

Actual nonstop routes vary by season and airline, so check the timetable for your exact departure city and date instead of assuming that every Chinese city has a direct Busan flight.

Why Gimhae Can Save Time

An Incheon arrival for a Busan-focused trip can require immigration, baggage collection, airport transport, another train or flight, and another transfer after arriving in Busan.

Gimhae removes that cross-country section.

It is particularly attractive for trips built around:

  • Busan
  • Gyeongju
  • Busan + Gyeongju
  • Other destinations in southeastern Korea

From Gimhae Airport, travelers can continue into Busan using the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail with subway connections, airport buses where available, or taxis depending on the destination and luggage.

The Gimhae Airport to Busan Guide compares the main transportation options after landing.

If you have not decided where to stay or how many days to spend in the city, use the Busan Travel Guide for First-Time Visitors.

4. Jeju: Best When the Island Is the Main Trip

A nonstop flight to Jeju can be the cleanest option when Jeju Island is the main reason for traveling to Korea.

As of July 2026, Jeju International Airport had nonstop international services connecting the island with 23 cities across six regions, including destinations in China.

This makes Jeju different from many other regional Korean destinations. International travelers do not always need to enter through Seoul first.

Choose a Jeju Direct Flight When

  • Jeju is your first and main Korean destination.
  • A nonstop flight operates from your Chinese departure city on suitable dates.
  • The direct fare is reasonable after including the cost of a domestic connection.
  • You want to avoid changing airports or rechecking baggage in the Seoul area.

After arrival, the next decision is where on the island you are staying. Jeju City is close to the airport, while Seogwipo, Jungmun, Seongsan, and other areas require additional ground transportation.

If your accommodation is in the southern part of the island, the Jeju Airport to Seogwipo Guide explains bus, taxi, rental-car, luggage, and late-arrival options.

Do Not Assume Incheon Has a Permanent Jeju Connection

A seasonal direct Incheon-Jeju domestic service operated from June 1 through August 7, 2026. That published schedule has ended, so travelers arriving at Incheon should not assume they can simply transfer to a Jeju flight at the same airport. Check current airline schedules. In many cases, travelers use Gimpo Airport for Seoul-area domestic flights to Jeju.

For domestic flight booking, baggage, ID, airport selection, and separate-ticket connection planning, read the Korea Domestic Flights Guide.

5. The Cheapest Flight Can Cost You More Later

International airfare is only one part of the cost.

Imagine that an Incheon flight is cheaper than a direct Busan flight. The comparison is incomplete until you add the Korean part of the trip.

Extra Cost or Time What Travelers Forget
Airport-to-station transport International arrival may not place you near the next train
KTX or domestic flight The second journey has its own fare
Baggage handling Separate tickets may require collecting and rechecking bags
Waiting buffer Immigration or an international delay can destroy a tight connection
Final local transport Arrival at the second airport or station still is not hotel arrival

Compare hotel-to-hotel travel, not runway-to-runway travel.

A flight that saves KRW 50,000 can be poor value if it adds another half day of transportation. A more expensive regional nonstop can be good value if it gives you several usable sightseeing hours back.

6. Three Itineraries, Three Different Airports

Itinerary 1: Five Nights in Seoul

The entire trip is centered on Seoul with perhaps one nearby day trip.

Best starting airport: Incheon. There is little reason to add a domestic journey before starting a Seoul-focused trip.

Itinerary 2: Busan + Gyeongju

You do not plan to spend meaningful time in Seoul.

Best airport to check first: Gimhae. A suitable direct flight can eliminate the Seoul-to-Busan transfer completely.

Itinerary 3: Jeju + Seoul

Jeju is an important part of the trip, but you also want several days in Seoul.

Best choice depends on flight availability. A China-to-Jeju nonstop followed later by a domestic flight to the Seoul area can be efficient, while an Incheon arrival may be better when the Seoul portion comes first.

The same traveler can therefore make three completely different airport decisions depending on the order of the itinerary.

7. Should You Use Different Arrival and Departure Airports?

Yes, sometimes an open-jaw itinerary is the most efficient way to travel through Korea.

An open-jaw trip means arriving through one Korean airport and leaving through another instead of returning to the original arrival city only to catch the flight home.

Example: Busan to Seoul

You could fly from China to Gimhae, travel around Busan and Gyeongju, take the KTX north to Seoul, and fly home from Incheon.

This avoids traveling from Seoul to Busan at the beginning and then returning to Seoul simply because the international ticket was a round trip through Incheon.

Example: Jeju to Seoul

You could fly from China directly to Jeju if a suitable international service operates, spend several days on the island, take a domestic flight to the Seoul area, and depart Korea through Incheon.

Open-jaw airfare can be more expensive than the cheapest simple return ticket, so compare the final price. The value comes from eliminating unnecessary backtracking.

8. When Incheon Still Wins for Busan or Jeju

A regional airport is not automatically better just because it is closer to your final destination.

Incheon can still win when:

  • The regional nonstop does not operate on your dates.
  • Incheon offers a much better departure time.
  • The fare difference is large enough to cover the extra Korean transportation.
  • You want to visit Seoul first anyway.
  • You need more airline choices or flexible rebooking options.
  • A regional route operates only on limited days of the week.

This is why flight schedules should be checked for the exact trip rather than copied from an old route list.

Jeju International Airport explicitly notes that flight schedules can be adjusted according to airline circumstances. The same practical rule applies to regional international routes generally.

If an itinerary requires a domestic flight after international arrival, build a generous connection buffer. Separate tickets may require immigration, baggage collection, customs, travel between airports, domestic check-in, baggage recheck, and another security screening.

9. Airport Decision Table

Trip Type Airport to Check First Why
Seoul only Incheon Most natural international gateway for Seoul
Seoul + Busan Incheon or open-jaw Depends on which city you visit first
Busan only Gimhae Avoids a cross-country transfer
Busan + Gyeongju Gimhae Best geographic fit for southeastern Korea
Jeju only Jeju direct if available Can eliminate a domestic connection
Jeju + Seoul Depends on trip order Compare China-Jeju direct plus domestic flight with an Incheon-first itinerary

The final rule is simple: choose the Korean airport that removes the most unnecessary travel from the itinerary, not automatically the airport with the lowest international fare.

Check nonstop availability first, then compare total airfare, baggage, airport transfers, domestic transportation, connection risk, and hotel-to-hotel time.

A traveler heading to Seoul, a traveler heading to Gyeongju, and a traveler heading to Jeju can all leave from the same Chinese airport and still have three different best arrival airports in Korea.

Information checked in August 2026. International routes and operating days change by airline and season. Always confirm the current timetable with the airline and official airport before booking a trip around a particular nonstop route.
