KORAIL Pass 2026: Is It Actually Cheaper Than Buying KTX Tickets Separately?

KORAIL Pass and separate KTX tickets compared with a calculator and SRT exclusion warning

You paid for unlimited train travel, then discovered that your SRT ticket was not included.

The next problem was worse: your preferred KTX had no assigned seats left.

A KORAIL Pass saves money only when the eligible tickets you would have bought cost more than the pass itself.

Important:

Do not buy the KORAIL Pass simply because you plan to visit several cities. Calculate the normal price of every eligible KORAIL journey first.

The fastest way to decide

Add: eligible KTX, ITX and other covered KORAIL fares.

Do not add: SRT, subway, bus and First Class supplements.

Compare: the eligible ticket total with the current pass price.

Information checked in July 2026:

Pass prices, eligible trains, seat rules and sales conditions can change. Confirm the current KORAIL purchase page before payment.

Quick Answer

The KORAIL Pass is worth buying only when the normal price of the eligible KORAIL tickets you need is higher than the pass price.

Count eligible train journeys, not the total number of days in Korea.

Buy the pass when

  • You will take several long-distance KORAIL trains
  • Most journeys fall on two to five selected travel days
  • The separate-ticket total exceeds the pass price
  • Your itinerary mainly uses KTX rather than SRT
  • Important trains still have reservable seats

Buy separate tickets when

  • You are taking only one short round trip
  • Your itinerary includes SRT
  • Train journeys are spread across many dates
  • The separate-ticket total stays below the pass price
  • Your route is still uncertain

Break-even formula

Eligible KORAIL ticket total − KORAIL Pass price = potential saving or loss

Important:

Do not include SRT, Seoul subway fares, bus fares, First Class supplements or journeys outside the selected pass days when calculating the pass value.

Calculate before buying

Add the normal price of every eligible KORAIL journey, then compare the total with the current pass price.

KORAIL Pass Prices in 2026

The current KORAIL purchase page lists four Select Pass options.

The selected travel days must fall within the pass conditions and the applicable 10-day selection period.

Pass Adult Child Break-Even Target
2-Day Select Pass KRW 131,000 KRW 66,000 Eligible tickets above KRW 131,000
3-Day Select Pass KRW 186,000 KRW 93,000 Eligible tickets above KRW 186,000
4-Day Select Pass KRW 234,000 KRW 117,000 Eligible tickets above KRW 234,000
5-Day Select Pass KRW 275,000 KRW 138,000 Eligible tickets above KRW 275,000

The adult category begins at age 13.

The child price applies to ages 6 through 12. KORAIL currently states that one child under age 6 can accompany one adult aged 13 or older without a separate pass under the published conditions.

Old screenshots can be misleading:

Older travel guides may show consecutive passes, 2-day or 4-day flexible passes and Saver Pass pricing. Check the current KORAIL purchase screen rather than relying on an old blog image.

Choose by train-use days

A five-day vacation does not automatically require a five-day KORAIL Pass. A traveler using long-distance trains on only two dates should compare the 2-Day Pass first.

Who Can Buy the KORAIL Pass?

The KORAIL Pass is designed for eligible international visitors traveling in Korea.

The traveler’s name and passport information must match the details entered during purchase.

Prepare these before buying

  • Valid passport
  • Name exactly as shown in the passport
  • Passport number and nationality
  • Email address
  • Supported payment card
  • Planned pass starting date

The pass is personal

The pass cannot be shared between travelers.

Each traveler must carry the passport that matches the pass information.

A group should not buy one pass and attempt to reserve seats for several people under the same traveler’s name.

Important:

A spelling difference, missing middle name or incorrect passport number can create a verification problem. Copy the traveler information directly from the passport.

Do Korean residents or citizens use this pass?

The international KORAIL Pass is a visitor product rather than a normal domestic rail discount.

Korean citizens and travelers who do not meet the current eligibility conditions should compare regular KORAIL tickets and domestic rail products instead.

Check the eligibility wording on the official purchase screen when residency or nationality status is unusual.

Which Trains Are Included?

The pass covers eligible passenger trains operated by KORAIL during the selected pass days.

Commonly included trains

  • KTX
  • KTX-Sancheon
  • KTX-Eum
  • ITX-Cheongchun
  • ITX-Saemaeul
  • ITX-Maeum
  • Mugunghwa
  • Other eligible regular KORAIL trains

Not included

  • SRT
  • Seoul and metropolitan subway services
  • Local buses
  • Excluded special tourist trains
  • First Class without the required supplement

Remember this

KTX → included when eligible under the pass conditions

SRT → separate ticket required

Seoul subway → separate transit payment required

KTX and SRT are not interchangeable

KTX is operated by KORAIL.

SRT is operated separately and commonly uses Suseo Station as its main Seoul departure point.

A traveler taking KTX from Seoul to Busan and SRT from Busan to Suseo must buy the SRT ticket separately.

Important:

KORAIL Pass does not mean every train in Korea is included. Check the operator shown beside each train before adding it to the savings calculation.

Is your train included?

Separate KORAIL services from SRT, subway and bus journeys before calculating the value.

Check Included Trains →

Guide to trains included in the KORAIL Pass and excluded transport such as SRT and Seoul subway

Does the Pass Guarantee a Seat?

No.

Buying the pass and reserving a specific seat are separate steps.

Correct order

Buy the pass → open My Ticket → select seat reservation → reserve each train → save the ticket details

Current seat-reservation rule

KORAIL currently allows up to two reserved train seats per person per pass day on eligible services.

A transfer reservation can use a different limit under the published conditions.

This means the pass can cover more travel than the number of assigned seats reserved, but a preferred assigned seat is not automatic.

What happens when the assigned seats are sold out?

A valid pass does not create extra reserved inventory.

The official guidance allows eligible standing or non-reserved travel under the pass conditions when assigned seats are unavailable, but comfort and availability can differ by train.

Popular KTX departures should be reserved when the normal booking window opens.

Important:

A valid pass does not reserve a specific KTX seat automatically. Reserve Friday evenings, Sunday returns, holiday trains and popular Busan or Gangneung departures early.

First Class is not automatically included

The basic value comparison should use Standard Class fares.

KORAIL currently states that First Class use requires an additional payment equal to 50% of the applicable First Class fare for the segment.

That supplement must be added to the real cost of using the pass.

Do not compare different products:

Compare a Standard Class KORAIL Pass journey with a Standard Class separate ticket. Adding First Class to only one side produces a misleading result.

Seat reservations can determine the real value

A pass can be cheaper on paper but less useful when the only convenient trains have no assigned seats.

Before buying, search the planned departures and check whether the itinerary still works with available trains.

How to Calculate the Break-Even Point

The calculation is simple when every journey is listed first.

Step 1. Write down every intercity segment

Seoul → Busan → Gyeongju → Jeonju → Seoul

Use railway stations rather than only city names.

A city-to-city trip may involve KTX, a regional KORAIL train, SRT or a bus.

Step 2. Search the normal fare

Open the official KORAIL booking page and search each eligible journey.

Record the normal Standard Class fare for the train you would realistically buy.

Do not use the cheapest theoretical train when the departure time does not fit the itinerary.

Step 3. Remove non-eligible transport

Remove:

  • SRT fares
  • Subway fares
  • Local and express buses
  • Airport transportation
  • First Class supplements
  • Journeys outside the selected pass days

Step 4. Group journeys by travel date

A Select Pass is based on train-use days.

Several journeys taken on one date can fit inside one selected pass day, subject to seat-reservation and train conditions.

A single short train taken on another date can require an additional selected day.

Step 5. Compare with the smallest suitable pass

Selected Days Needed Pass Price Pass Begins to Save Money When
2 days KRW 131,000 Eligible separate tickets cost more than KRW 131,000
3 days KRW 186,000 Eligible separate tickets cost more than KRW 186,000
4 days KRW 234,000 Eligible separate tickets cost more than KRW 234,000
5 days KRW 275,000 Eligible separate tickets cost more than KRW 275,000

Use this worksheet

Date Journey Operator Normal Fare Pass Eligible?
Day 1 Seoul → Destination A KORAIL or SR Enter current fare Yes or No
Day 2 Destination A → Destination B KORAIL or SR Enter current fare Yes or No
Day 3 Destination B → Seoul KORAIL or SR Enter current fare Yes or No

Read the result correctly

Eligible tickets total KRW 150,000

2-Day Pass KRW 131,000

Potential saving before supplements: KRW 19,000

Eligible tickets total KRW 120,000

2-Day Pass KRW 131,000

Separate tickets are KRW 11,000 cheaper

These are calculation examples, not route quotations.

Use the actual fares displayed for the selected date, train and class.

KORAIL Pass vs. Separate Tickets

Scenario 1. Seoul–Busan round trip

A single long-distance return journey can be close to the 2-Day Pass threshold.

Calculate:

Seoul → Busan normal fare

+ Busan → Seoul normal fare

Compare with KRW 131,000

Do not assume the pass is automatically cheaper because the route is long.

Separate tickets may still cost less, especially when only one return journey is needed.

Scenario 2. Seoul–Busan–Gyeongju–Seoul

This itinerary contains several eligible segments and can make the pass more competitive.

The important question is how many dates are used.

Day 1: Seoul → Busan

Day 2: Busan → Gyeongju → Seoul

Possible comparison: 2-Day Pass vs. three separate tickets

Check whether the regional segment uses an eligible KORAIL train and whether the connection time is realistic.

Scenario 3. Seoul–Gangneung round trip

A shorter KTX round trip may remain below the price of the 2-Day Pass.

This is a common example where “unlimited” sounds attractive but separate tickets can be cheaper.

Search the exact outbound and return fares before buying the pass.

Scenario 4. KTX outbound and SRT return

KTX outbound → potentially covered

SRT return → separate ticket required

The SRT fare cannot be counted as a pass saving.

This mixed itinerary often makes the pass less attractive.

Scenario 5. Five nights in Korea with two train days

The traveler stays in Korea for five nights but takes long-distance trains only on the arrival and return dates.

The correct comparison starts with a 2-Day Pass, not a 5-Day Pass.

Count movement days:

Hotel nights, sightseeing days and subway-only days do not automatically require additional KORAIL Pass days.

Scenario 6. Seoul–Busan–Gyeongju–Jeonju–Seoul

A multicity itinerary with several eligible KORAIL journeys is the type most likely to benefit from a pass.

The pass becomes stronger when:

  • Long journeys are concentrated on selected dates
  • The itinerary avoids SRT
  • The separate-ticket total is clearly above the threshold
  • Important assigned seats remain available

Scenario 7. Flexible itinerary with no fixed cities

A pass can provide flexibility, but flexibility has value only when the traveler actually uses enough eligible trains.

A loosely planned trip can also create unused pass days.

Travelers who may stay longer in one city should compare the cost of buying tickets as the route becomes fixed.

KORAIL Pass vs. KORAIL PASS+

KORAIL PASS+ is not a separate unlimited subway pass.

It combines an existing KORAIL Pass with a rechargeable transportation and payment card function.

How KORAIL PASS+ works

  • Buy an eligible KORAIL Pass
  • Enter the pass number through the PASS+ process
  • Pay the additional KRW 8,000 card fee
  • Collect the physical card from a designated kiosk
  • Top up the transportation balance
  • Use the balance for eligible subway, bus and offline payments
Item KORAIL Pass KORAIL PASS+
Eligible KORAIL trains Covered under pass rules Covered through the linked pass
Subway and bus Not included Paid from topped-up balance
Offline store payments No payment-card function Available at participating locations
Additional card fee None KRW 8,000
SRT Not included Not included

Important:

KORAIL PASS+ does not make subway and bus rides free. Add money to the transportation-card balance, and the fare is deducted each time you travel.

Where can the card be collected?

The current official tourism notice lists designated NAMANE Card kiosks at Incheon International Airport and major KTX stations including Seoul, Yongsan and Busan.

Check the current kiosk list and opening conditions before planning to collect the card at a specific location.

Is PASS+ worth the additional fee?

It can be convenient for a traveler who wants one physical card for intercity-pass identification, local transit payments and some store purchases.

It is not automatically cheaper than using another rechargeable transportation card.

Compare local transit options

KORAIL PASS+ and T-money both require a balance for local transportation. Compare collection locations, card fee and convenience.

When the KORAIL Pass Is Worth It

Several long-distance journeys

The pass is strongest when the itinerary includes multiple KTX or other eligible KORAIL journeys.

A multicity route can exceed the pass threshold more easily than one return trip.

Travel concentrated on selected dates

The traveler can use several eligible journeys on the selected pass days under the pass rules.

Long stays in each city between those travel dates do not require every vacation day to be selected.

Routes using KORAIL rather than SRT

A route built mainly around KTX, ITX and other eligible KORAIL services captures more pass value.

An itinerary using SRT for several segments reduces that value.

Early seat planning

The pass is more useful when the traveler can reserve important trains before popular seats sell out.

This is especially important for:

  • Friday evening departures
  • Sunday return journeys
  • Seollal and Chuseok periods
  • Cherry-blossom and autumn weekends
  • Major concerts and festivals
  • Popular Busan, Gyeongju and Gangneung schedules

A clear financial margin

A tiny estimated saving can disappear after adding a First Class supplement, unused pass day or separate SRT ticket.

The pass is more convincing when the eligible-ticket total exceeds the pass price by a meaningful amount.

Strong pass candidate

Several long-distance KORAIL journeys + few selected travel dates + early seat reservations + ticket total clearly above the pass price

When Separate Tickets Are Cheaper

Only one short round trip

A Seoul–Gangneung return or another shorter journey may cost less than the 2-Day Pass.

Unlimited use does not matter when only two trains are needed.

Only one long return journey

Even Seoul–Busan round trip should be priced before buying the pass.

The difference can be small enough that regular tickets remain the simpler choice.

The itinerary includes SRT

SRT must be paid separately.

A KTX outbound and SRT return can leave only one eligible long-distance journey for the pass calculation.

Travel dates are spread out

A traveler taking one train every few days can require a larger pass even when each journey is inexpensive.

Separate tickets may be cheaper than buying more selected days.

The route is not fixed

A pass purchased before the itinerary is confirmed can create unused days.

Separate tickets give a clearer refund and change calculation for each journey.

Discounted tickets are available

Compare the ticket price you can actually purchase, not only a full undiscounted reference fare.

A separate-ticket promotion or eligible discount can move the total below the pass threshold.

You want First Class on several trains

Repeated First Class supplements can increase the real pass cost.

Compare the complete pass-plus-supplement total with separate First Class tickets.

Weak pass candidate

One short return trip + SRT segments + journeys spread across many dates + uncertain route + separate-ticket total below the pass price

How to Buy and Use the Pass

Step 1. Price every planned journey

Search each segment through the official KORAIL booking system.

Record the actual train, time and Standard Class fare that fit the itinerary.

Need the KTX booking process?

Check official sites, departure stations, seat selection and sold-out alternatives before building the pass calculation.

Open the KTX Booking Guide →

Step 2. Separate KORAIL and non-KORAIL transport

Mark each journey as KORAIL, SRT, subway, bus or another operator.

Only eligible KORAIL fares belong in the pass-savings total.

Step 3. Count train-use days

Choose the smallest pass that covers the required dates.

Do not choose by hotel nights or total vacation length.

Step 4. Buy through the official KORAIL system

Enter the traveler information exactly as shown in the passport.

Review the pass type, starting date, selected-day conditions and refund policy before payment.

Step 5. Reserve the important trains

Open My Ticket and select the KORAIL Pass seat-reservation function.

Reserve the trains that would damage the itinerary if unavailable.

Check:

  • Travel date
  • Departure station
  • Arrival station
  • Train number
  • Car number
  • Seat number

Step 6. Save everything offline

  • Pass number
  • Pass confirmation
  • Selected travel dates
  • Every train reservation
  • Train, car and seat numbers
  • Purchase email

Step 7. Carry the matching passport

Keep the passport available during railway travel.

A screenshot of the passport is not automatically a replacement for the original identification required by the pass conditions.

Step 8. Check the pass day before boarding

Confirm that the journey falls on a valid selected day.

A train outside the selected dates requires a separate ticket.

Refund timing

KORAIL currently states that no refund fee applies through the day before the pass starting date, based on Korean time.

Refunds are not available after the starting date.

Important:

Do not wait until the first pass day to cancel an unused pass. Review the current refund conditions before the starting date.

7 KORAIL Pass Mistakes Tourists Make

1. Buying the pass before pricing the tickets

The word “unlimited” creates a strong buying impulse.

Unlimited travel is not cheaper when the required tickets cost less than the pass.

Price the itinerary first. Buy the pass second.

2. Counting SRT as an included train

SRT is not covered.

Separate the SR-operated journey before calculating the pass value.

3. Assuming the Seoul subway is free

Local metropolitan rail fares are not included in the ordinary KORAIL Pass.

Use a separate transportation payment method.

Plan local transportation separately

The KORAIL Pass covers eligible intercity trains, not ordinary Seoul subway travel.

Open the Seoul Subway Guide →

4. Choosing by vacation length

A seven-day trip can require only two pass days.

A four-day trip can require four pass days when the traveler changes cities every day.

Count long-distance train-use dates.

5. Forgetting to reserve seats

Pass purchased does not mean assigned seat reserved.

Open My Ticket and reserve the trains separately.

6. Using old prices or discontinued pass types

Old articles may show products that are no longer listed on the current purchase page.

Check the official KORAIL screen immediately before payment.

7. Assuming First Class is free

The pass is not an automatic First Class upgrade.

Add the required supplement to the total-cost comparison.

The most expensive mistake:

Buying a 5-Day Pass for a five-night vacation when the traveler uses only two eligible trains can cost more than buying the tickets separately.

Does the KORAIL Pass include SRT?

No. SRT tickets must be purchased separately through SR.

Does it include the Seoul subway?

No. Seoul and metropolitan subway fares are separate.

What is the difference between KORAIL Pass and KORAIL PASS+?

KORAIL PASS+ adds a rechargeable transportation and payment-card function to an eligible KORAIL Pass for an additional KRW 8,000.

No. The card must be topped up, and local fares are deducted from the balance.

Does buying the pass reserve a seat?

No. Open the KORAIL Pass reservation function and reserve each preferred train separately.

How many seat reservations can I make per day?

KORAIL currently lists up to two assigned-seat reservations per person per pass day, with separate treatment for eligible transfer reservations.

Can I board when assigned seats are sold out?

The official pass conditions allow eligible standing or non-reserved travel on covered trains, but comfort and availability differ. Confirm the current train conditions before relying on this option.

Should I buy a 5-Day Pass for a five-day vacation?

Only when long-distance eligible trains are used on five selected days and the ticket total exceeds KRW 275,000. Vacation length alone does not determine the pass.

Can I use the pass on nonconsecutive days?

The current Select Pass structure allows selected use days within the published validity window. Confirm the dates displayed during purchase.

Do children receive a cheaper pass?

Yes. KORAIL currently lists reduced child prices for ages 6 through 12.

Do I need to carry my passport?
