A T-money card bought in Seoul does not stop working when you arrive in Busan. You can continue using the same card on much of Busan’s public transportation system as long as it has enough balance.
For most international visitors, a rechargeable transportation card is more convenient than buying a separate ticket for every subway or bus journey. It also provides lower card fares and makes eligible bus and subway transfers easier.
Most important Busan rule: Tap when entering the subway or boarding a bus, and always tap again when leaving. The exit tap is especially important when transferring to another bus or train.
1. Does T-money Work in Busan?
Yes. A standard T-money card can be used on major forms of public transportation in Busan.
Common uses include:
- Busan Metro Lines 1, 2, 3, and 4
- Regular Busan city buses
- Busan express city buses
- Village and neighborhood buses
- Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit
- Compatible sections of the Donghae Line commuter railway
- Some taxis and participating stores displaying a compatible transportation-card logo
A T-money card purchased in Seoul can normally be used in Busan without registration or conversion. You do not need to buy a Busan-only card simply because you have changed cities.
Other compatible prepaid transportation cards may also work in Busan, but this guide focuses on T-money because it is widely used by international travelers throughout Korea.
Do not confuse T-money with the VISIT BUSAN PASS. T-money is a rechargeable transportation card. The VISIT BUSAN PASS is primarily a tourism pass for participating attractions, with transportation features depending on the selected product.
2. Where to Buy a T-money Card
T-money cards are commonly available at convenience stores and transportation facilities. Availability can vary by individual store, so ask the cashier if the card is not displayed near the register.
Places where travelers can commonly look include:
- Convenience stores near Busan Station, Seomyeon, Nampo, Haeundae, and Gwangalli
- Convenience stores inside or near Gimhae International Airport
- Selected subway station service areas or transportation-card vending machines
- Stores displaying a T-money or compatible transportation-card sign
At a convenience store, you can say:
“T-money card, please.”

The card purchase price and transportation balance are separate. Buying a card does not necessarily mean that it already contains enough money for a journey.
For example, if you pay for the physical card and ask for KRW 20,000 to be added, the total payment will include both the card price and the KRW 20,000 stored balance.
Suggested starting balance: KRW 15,000–30,000 is practical for many short Busan visits, depending on the number of days, airport transportation, and daily bus or subway use.
Do not add an unnecessarily large amount on the first day. Recharging is easy, while refunding a large unused balance can require an additional step.
3. How to Recharge the Card
You can recharge a T-money card at many convenience stores and compatible subway station machines.
Standard physical-card top-ups are commonly completed with Korean won cash. Do not assume that an overseas credit card can be used to recharge the physical card at every machine or convenience store.
Recharging at a convenience store
- Give the card to the cashier.
- Say the amount you want to add.
- Pay the requested amount in Korean won.
- Wait for the cashier to place the card on the reader.
- Check the updated balance before leaving.
You can say:
“Please add 20,000 won.”

Recharging at a subway station
Look for a transportation-card recharge machine. Many machines provide an English-language option.
- Select the English language button.
- Choose the transportation-card recharge option.
- Place the card on the marked reader.
- Select or enter the recharge amount.
- Insert Korean won banknotes accepted by the machine.
- Leave the card on the reader until the process finishes.
- Confirm the new balance shown on the screen.
If the machine does not recognize your card or banknote, use another machine or ask station staff for help.
Keep a small amount of Korean won available for transportation-card top-ups even if you use credit cards for most other travel expenses.
4. How to Use T-money on the Busan Metro
Using T-money on the Busan Metro is straightforward.
- Find the gate showing a green entry arrow.
- Place the card flat against the card reader.
- Wait for the confirmation sound and balance display.
- Walk through only after the gate opens.
- At your destination, tap the same card at the exit gate.
The display normally shows the fare charged and the remaining balance. Watch the screen briefly so you can notice a low balance before the next journey.

When transferring between Busan Metro lines inside the paid area, follow the transfer signs and do not exit through a fare gate unless the route specifically requires it.
Leaving the paid area and re-entering can create a new fare rather than a normal internal subway transfer.
5. How to Use T-money on Busan Buses
Busan city buses normally have a transportation-card reader near the front entrance and another reader near the exit door.
When boarding
- Board through the front door unless instructed otherwise.
- Tap the card once on the reader.
- Wait for the confirmation sound.
- Move inside without tapping repeatedly.
Before leaving
- Press the stop-request button before your stop.
- Move toward the exit safely after the bus has slowed.
- Tap the same card on the exit reader.
- Wait for the confirmation sound before getting off.

One card per passenger is best. Using one T-money card to pay for several adults can interfere with individual transfer discounts and makes the next journey more complicated.
6. How Busan Transfer Discounts Work
Busan provides eligible transfer discounts between participating public transportation services when you use the same transportation card correctly.
The general transfer process is:
- Tap when boarding or entering the first service.
- Tap when getting off the bus or exiting the station.
- Transfer to the next eligible service within the permitted time.
- Use the same T-money card for the next ride.
Busan’s public transportation system generally allows up to two eligible transfers when each transfer is completed within approximately 30 minutes after leaving the previous service.
An additional fare may still be charged when:
- The next transportation type has a higher base fare
- The trip crosses a fare boundary
- The rail distance requires an additional fare
- The transfer time has expired
- You did not tap when leaving the previous bus
- You use a different card for the next service
- The service is excluded from the transfer program
- You board the same route again in a way that does not qualify as a transfer
A transfer discount does not always mean a zero-won second ride. You may pay a fare difference or distance charge even when the transfer itself is recognized.
Cash passengers cannot receive the same transportation-card transfer discount.
If you forget to tap when getting off a bus, the system may not record the correct end of the trip. This can cancel the next transfer benefit or affect the fare calculation.
7. Using T-money from Gimhae Airport
T-money is useful immediately after arriving at Gimhae International Airport.
For the railway route, use the card on the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail Transit from Gimhae International Airport Station. Travelers heading toward central Busan commonly transfer at Sasang Station to Busan Metro Line 2.
Keep enough balance for the entire rail journey, including any fare difference created by the transfer.
Regular city buses serving the airport also accept compatible transportation cards. However, airport limousine buses operate under different fare and transfer conditions.
Busan’s reorganized airport limousine services allow transportation-card payment when seats are available, but they do not provide the normal public transportation transfer benefit. Some departures may also require or strongly favor advance booking.

8. Transportation Not Covered Like a Normal Tap Ride
T-money is useful for city transportation, but it does not replace every ticket or reservation in Busan.
Do not rely on a simple T-money tap for:
- KTX and other reserved intercity trains
- Intercity and express buses requiring a separate ticket
- Busan City Tour Bus products
- Private tour buses and hotel shuttles
- Reserved airport limousine journeys when advance booking is required
- Attraction admission included with the VISIT BUSAN PASS
- Some taxis or merchants without compatible card readers
The Donghae Line commuter service and a reserved intercity train can depart from related railway areas but use different fare systems. Confirm the train name and platform rather than assuming that every rail journey is a transportation-card trip.
T-money also does not turn into an unlimited Busan travel pass. Each eligible journey deducts a fare from the stored balance.
9. Checking the Balance and Getting a Refund
You can check the remaining balance when tapping at a subway gate, using a recharge machine, or asking a participating convenience-store cashier.
Maintain a small reserve instead of waiting until the balance reaches almost zero. A fare difference or longer rail journey can require more money than expected.
If the balance is too low
- Recharge before entering the subway.
- Use a fare-adjustment machine if you cannot exit.
- Ask station staff if the card produces an error.
- At a convenience store, request a cash top-up.
Refunding the remaining balance
Participating T-money locations can process eligible balance refunds. A service fee may be deducted, and the physical card purchase price is normally not refunded.
Small-balance refunds may be available at participating convenience stores, while larger balances may require a designated service center or different refund location.
Before requesting a refund:
- Check the balance.
- Confirm that the store provides refund service.
- Expect the remaining eligible amount in Korean won.
- Allow for the applicable refund service fee.
- Do not expect the original card purchase price back.
You can also keep the card for a future Korea trip. Standard T-money cards are not limited to Busan and can remain useful in other compatible Korean cities.
