Duty-Free Shopping Guide
Duty-free shopping and tax refunds are not the same thing in South Korea.
Downtown and online duty-free purchases usually need to be collected at the airport before boarding. You also need to check liquid, transit and destination customs rules before deciding whether the price is really a good deal.
This duty-free shopping guide explains airport, downtown and online shopping in Korea, including airport pickup, sealed liquid bags, customs allowances and price comparisons.
Rule check: This guide reflects official Korea tourism, airport and customs information checked in July 2026. Retailer deadlines, pickup counters, flight rules and customs allowances can change.

Quick Answer
Foreign travelers can use airport, downtown and online duty-free stores in South Korea. The purchase and pickup process depends on where the order is placed.
- ✓ Airport duty-free: shop after security and take the product immediately
- ✓ Downtown duty-free: shop in the city and collect the order at the airport
- ✓ Online duty-free: order before departure and collect after departure screening
- ✓ Passport and accurate flight details are normally required
- ✓ Large duty-free liquids must remain inside the sealed security bag
- ✓ Transit airports may apply different liquid rules
- ✓ Your destination country’s customs allowance still applies
- ✓ Duty-free shopping and tax refund shopping are different systems
This guide focuses on duty-free shopping when leaving South Korea. Arrival duty-free purchases and goods brought back into Korea are subject to Korean entry customs limits.
1. Duty-Free vs. Tax Refund
Duty-free shopping removes eligible Korean taxes and duties at the point of purchase. Tax refund shopping starts with a normal retail purchase and refunds eligible Korean tax afterward.
Duty-Free Shopping
- ✓ Shop at an airport, downtown or online duty-free store
- ✓ Provide passport and departure information
- ✓ Pay the duty-free price at checkout
- ✓ Collect downtown and online orders at the airport
- ✓ Take the goods out of South Korea
Tax Refund Shopping
- ✓ Shop at a participating regular retail store
- ✓ Pay a price that normally includes Korean tax
- ✓ Receive an immediate or departure tax refund when eligible
- ✓ Take the product with you after purchasing it
- ✓ Follow the store’s tax-refund and export requirements
Olive Young, department stores and other regular shops may offer tax refunds, but they are not automatically duty-free stores. Look for the store’s tax-refund sign and confirm eligibility before paying.
Shopping at regular stores?
Check purchase requirements, immediate refunds and airport refund procedures before paying.
2. Where to Shop Duty-Free in Korea
Travelers can choose between airport, downtown and online duty-free shopping. Each option has a different balance of convenience, selection and pickup time.
Airport Duty-Free
Airport duty-free stores are located after security and departure screening. You buy the product and take it directly to the boarding gate.
- ✓ No separate pickup counter is normally required
- ✓ Products can be checked before purchase
- ✓ Useful for last-minute shopping
- ✓ Shopping time depends on airport arrival time
- ✓ Popular products may be unavailable
Incheon Airport has different duty-free operators and stores across Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and the Concourse. Check the official airport store directory for the correct terminal.
Downtown Duty-Free
Downtown duty-free stores allow travelers to compare products while staying in Seoul. Major stores can be found in shopping areas such as Myeongdong.
Products purchased at a downtown duty-free store are normally not taken back to the hotel. The store provides an exchange voucher, and the order is collected inside the airport’s departure area.
- ✓ More time to compare products
- ✓ Passport and departure details required
- ✓ Airport pickup required
- ✓ Purchase availability depends on the departure schedule
Online Duty-Free
Online duty-free stores are useful for comparing member prices, coupons, stock and promotions before departure.
The order is linked to the traveler’s passport and flight information. It is then collected from the retailer’s designated airport pickup counter.
- ✓ Compare products before reaching the airport
- ✓ Check online coupons and membership prices
- ✓ Confirm product-specific order deadlines
- ✓ Collect the order after departure screening
3. What You Need to Buy Duty-Free
Duty-free shopping is connected to the traveler’s departure from South Korea. Enter the information exactly as it appears on the passport and flight booking.
- ✓ Physical passport
- ✓ Passport number
- ✓ English name exactly as printed on the passport
- ✓ Departure airport
- ✓ Departure date and time
- ✓ Flight number
- ✓ Destination
- ✓ Boarding pass for airport pickup
- ✓ Exchange voucher or mobile pickup barcode
A mismatch in the passport number, English name or flight information can prevent the retailer from releasing the order.
Update the order when the flight number, departure date, airport or terminal changes. Contact the duty-free retailer before the modification deadline shown in the order details.
4. How Online Duty-Free Shopping Works
Online duty-free shopping starts before the airport, but the product is normally received only after the traveler completes the departure process.
Online Shopping Process
- ✓ Create an account with the duty-free retailer
- ✓ Register passport information
- ✓ Enter the departure airport and flight details
- ✓ Select products and options
- ✓ Check the final order and pickup deadline
- ✓ Complete payment
- ✓ Save the exchange voucher or mobile barcode
- ✓ Collect the order at the airport
Travel note: Online duty-free order deadlines are not the same for every product.
Enter your exact departure airport, date and flight time before shopping, then check the pickup availability shown at checkout.
A same-day pickup option may be available for selected products, flights and airports. Do not assume that every item can be ordered on the day of departure.
Online duty-free purchases are generally not delivered to a hotel or temporary address in Korea. They are prepared for collection in the airport’s secure departure area.
5. How to Pick Up Your Order at the Airport
Downtown and online duty-free purchases are collected after airport check-in, security screening and departure screening.
Airport Pickup Process
- ✓ Complete airline check-in
- ✓ Pass through airport security
- ✓ Complete departure screening
- ✓ Find the pickup counter shown on the voucher
- ✓ Present the physical passport
- ✓ Present the boarding pass
- ✓ Show the exchange voucher or mobile barcode
- ✓ Sign for and inspect the order
Pickup counters are separated by retailer and terminal. A Lotte Duty Free order cannot normally be collected from another company’s counter.
The voucher should show the correct terminal and pickup counter. Check it again after any flight or terminal change.
Leave enough time for check-in, security, departure screening and the walk to the pickup counter. Airport queues can be longer during weekends, holidays and peak departure hours.
Check Before Leaving the Counter
- ✓ Product name
- ✓ Quantity
- ✓ Color, shade or size
- ✓ Packaging condition
- ✓ Security seal on liquid purchases
- ✓ Receipt and purchase documents
Report a missing, damaged or incorrect product before leaving the pickup counter. Resolving the problem becomes more difficult after boarding or leaving South Korea.
6. Duty-Free Liquids and Transit Rules
Perfume, alcohol and large liquid cosmetics may exceed the normal 100 ml international carry-on limit when purchased duty-free.
These items must be placed inside an approved Duty Free Liquid Item Bag. Keep the bag sealed and keep the receipt with the purchase until the final flight is completed.
- ✓ Check that the security bag is completely sealed
- ✓ Keep the receipt inside or attached to the bag
- ✓ Do not open the bag during the journey
- ✓ Check liquid rules at every transit airport
- ✓ Keep the bag available for another security inspection
Important:
Duty-free liquid rules may change at your transit airport. Keep the security bag sealed, keep the receipt and check every airport on your itinerary before buying alcohol, perfume or large liquid cosmetics.
A duty-free liquid accepted at a Korean airport may still be restricted during another security screening. This is especially important when changing terminals, collecting baggage or traveling on separate tickets.
LIQUID RULES
Flying with Liquids or Cosmetics?
Check Korea’s 100 ml carry-on limit, transparent bag requirements and duty-free liquid rules.
Check Korea’s Airport Liquid Rules →AIRPORT SECURITY
Check Airport Security Before Packing
Review liquids, batteries, aerosols, sharp items and transit security restrictions.
Check Airport Security Rules →7. Customs Allowance and Declaration
Duty-free describes how the product was sold in Korea. It does not mean the product is automatically exempt from customs duty at the final destination.
Leaving South Korea
Travelers must check the customs allowance of the country where they will enter with the goods.
A handbag, watch, perfume or bottle of alcohol purchased duty-free in Korea may need to be declared when its value or quantity exceeds the destination country’s limit.
Keep receipts for high-value purchases. Customs officers may use purchase records when calculating the value of imported goods.
Returning to South Korea
Travelers entering South Korea currently have a general personal duty-free allowance of up to US$800.
The following categories have separate limits:
- ✓ Alcohol: a combined total of up to 2 L and US$400
- ✓ Cigarettes: up to 200 cigarettes
- ✓ Perfume: up to 100 ml
Alcohol and tobacco allowances do not apply to travelers below the legal age. Goods exceeding the applicable allowance may need to be declared and taxed.
Entering South Korea with expensive goods?
Check duty-free allowances, alcohol and tobacco limits, cash declarations and restricted items.
8. Is Duty-Free Always Cheaper?
Duty-free can be a good deal, but the duty-free label alone does not guarantee the lowest final price.
Compare the complete cost rather than looking only at the displayed base price.
- ✓ Duty-free base price
- ✓ Membership discount
- ✓ Online coupon
- ✓ Credit-card promotion
- ✓ Exchange rate used at checkout
- ✓ Regular store sale price
- ✓ Tax refund amount
- ✓ Possible customs duty at the destination
Korean cosmetics, local brands and souvenirs may be cheaper at a regular store during a sale, especially after an immediate tax refund. Imported cosmetics, alcohol and luxury products may offer stronger duty-free promotions.
Before buying cosmetics or Korean brands duty-free, compare the final price with regular stores in Myeongdong after discounts and tax refunds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can tourists shop duty-free in South Korea?
Yes. Foreign travelers departing from South Korea can shop at airport, downtown and online duty-free stores when they provide the required passport and departure information.
What is the difference between duty-free and tax refund shopping?
Duty-free stores remove eligible taxes and duties at the point of sale. Tax refund shopping takes place at participating regular stores and refunds eligible Korean tax after or during the purchase process.
Do I need my passport to shop duty-free in Korea?
Yes. A passport and confirmed departure information are normally required for downtown and online duty-free shopping. A boarding pass is also required when collecting the order at the airport.
Can I take downtown duty-free purchases to my hotel?
Normally, no. Downtown duty-free purchases are prepared for export and collected at the designated airport pickup counter after departure screening.
Where do I collect online duty-free purchases?
Collect the order from the retailer’s pickup counter inside the secure departure area. The exact terminal and counter should be shown on the exchange voucher.
How early should I arrive for duty-free pickup?
Allow extra time for airline check-in, security, departure screening, walking to the counter and waiting for the order. Follow the pickup-time recommendation shown by the retailer.
Can I buy duty-free items on the same day as my flight?
Some retailers offer same-day pickup for selected products and flights. Availability depends on the airport, departure time, stock and product preparation deadline.
Can I open a duty-free liquid bag before my connection?
It is safer to keep the bag sealed until the final flight is completed. Opening the bag can cause the liquid to be rejected during another security screening.
Are duty-free items exempt from customs at my destination?
No. The destination country applies its own traveler allowance. Goods exceeding that allowance may need to be declared and taxed.
Is duty-free shopping always cheaper in Korea?
No. Compare the final duty-free price with regular store sales, coupons, tax refunds, exchange rates and possible destination customs charges.
What happens if my flight or terminal changes?
Update the departure information with the duty-free retailer as soon as possible. A terminal or flight change can affect the pickup counter and whether the order can be prepared in time.
Can I return duty-free purchases after leaving Korea?
Return rules depend on the retailer, product and customs status. Contact the duty-free retailer immediately because international returns may require additional shipping, customs or re-export procedures.
