[Korea Local Brief] Lotte World Aquarium’s New Aqua Gallery Brings Korean Beauty to Seou

Korean traditional aesthetics and modern lighting inside Lotte World Aquarium’s Aqua Gallery in Seoul

Lotte World Aquarium is introducing a new exhibition space that blends traditional Korean aesthetics with modern lighting design.

On the 16th, Lotte World Aquarium will officially open “Aqua Gallery: Garden of Water Light,” a renewed exhibition area located in the jellyfish zone on Basement Level 2. The newly unveiled space is designed to offer visitors a distinctive atmosphere through colorful aquarium displays, creative tank shapes, and immersive lighting effects set against a dark backdrop. Inside the uniquely designed tanks, around 3,800 small freshwater fish swim through the space, creating a visually captivating experience.

The new area welcomes visitors with five themed zones. After passing through the “Gate of Journey,” a reinterpretation of a traditional door symbolizing the moon, visitors enter the “Corridor of Light,” inspired by Jongmyo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The “Flowing River” zone features curved aquarium tanks that reinterpret the wave patterns of Irworobongdo, a royal decorative painting from the Joseon Dynasty, naturally guiding visitors through the exhibition route.

The “Flower Banquet,” decorated with purple wisteria hanging from the ceiling, and the “Lanterns of the Blue Sea,” featuring traditional Korean hanji lanterns, use mirrored walls to create the illusion of an endlessly connected space. In the “Seasonal Library,” inspired by chaekgado, a traditional Joseon-era folk painting style depicting bookshelves and objects, visitors can enjoy a scene where traditional crafts and freshwater fish come together to express the beauty of Korea’s four seasons.

A variety of hands-on experiences and food offerings will also be available for visitors. At the animal hospital desk on Basement Level 2, fish pouch keyrings and mood light-making kits will be sold. Exclusive merchandise reflecting traditional Korean aesthetics, including badges and eco bags, will be available at the Aqua Shop on Basement Level 1 and the merchandise cart on Basement Level 2. Café The Ocean, located on Basement Level 2, will also launch its signature drink, “Goldfish Cube Soda,” featuring milk ice cubes shaped like goldfish.

By bringing traditional Korean beauty into the aquarium setting, Lotte World Aquarium’s new exhibition is expected to draw attention as a potential new attraction, especially among younger visitors with a strong interest in culture-driven experiences.
